How to Create a Gorgeous, Authentic Art Journal Page
Hello You Wonderful, Creative Soul:
This is a post I have been wanting to practice for you for some time: a costless mini fine art journaling grade and tutorial! Information technology's a footstep-by-step tutorial for creating a gorgeous, accurate journal page with no canned stamps or stencils. I promise information technology will exist FAR easier than you think.
Permit's practise information technology!
Assemble Your Art Goodies (Materials):
(Isn't goodies such a more advisable term for something so fun?)
- Fine art periodical (or just evidently white or colored folio if you don't have a journal.)
- Watercolors (I'm using block watercolors, but if you have a different kind that'south fine.)
- String
- Pair of scissors
- Paintbrush
- Patently paper for pressing
- Paper towel for wiping hands or any messes
Optional Art Goodies:
- Chalk pastels or Conte crayon
- White gel pen or paint pen
- White gesso
Create Some Simple Shapes on the Page:
one. Choose a color and paint a uncomplicated shape a few times randomly on the page.
(I chose a leaf shape.) You might exercise a circumvolve, square, oval, triangle, or baggy blobs. The shapes may overlap or not, run off the folio or stay on.
I have better luck with my compositions when I try go along them a chip random looking. Play. Leave some white space. When you paint your shape, don't "color in" your whole shape. We are going to layer in some other colors.
2. Choose a 2nd color and "color in" some of the white space you left inside your shapes.
At this stage, I added more leafage shapes, equally the page still felt a bit empty.
You can too choose to add a third colour. For mine, I brushed in a niggling dark-brown into some leaves and a lilliputian purple into others.
Endeavor different things and see what you lot like. If this feels intimidating, have a bit paper nearby to experiment before committing on your page.
Recollect though, fifty-fifty if y'all don't similar what comes out right now, things are going to change a lot, and then hang in there.
3. Cutting about 12 inches of cord.
Place information technology in your water cup and get it moisture all over. Squeeze out all the excess water.
Next, press the string direct into a Wet watercolor square to transfer the color to the string. Practice this with 1 – 3 complimentary shades that are pleasing to your heart and go color on unlike areas of the string. Don't be also verbal.
4. Lay the string down in any random pattern on the page.
And then, place a manifestly canvass of newspaper over the string and press.
If the cord is very moisture, it will "cook" and "splatter" a chip. If it'southward dryer, you lot will see more texture from the string. Follow your own gustatory modality and experiment to decide whether to keep it more moisture or dry out. There's no "correct" or "wrong."
You lot will cease up with a "print" of the string on your periodical page, as well as a print on your pressing page. You may want to utilise these pressing pages for other projects – they are so beautiful!
Press your cord into your folio every bit many or as few times equally y'all wish. Again, you can experiment on scrap paper, or just go for it in your journal.
Optional Embellishments
You might decide that you like your epitome as is correct now. If so, and so STOP. Don't overwork it. First another and have some more chances. This is a quick process, then experiment and take fun with it.
5. Cull a colour (or two) and make full in some of the white spaces in between your shapes and your string marks on the page.
6. Use chalk pastels or conte crayon to accentuate a few areas in your painting once the watercolor is dry.
This volition create more than depth through highlights and lowlights.
You might create involvement and item with dots, lines, and areas of texture using a white gel or pigment pen. (I similar Gelly Gyre from Sakura. Yous tin can find it online or at any art or craft store.)
Or, yous might also determine to write in meaningful words, phrases, quotes, lyrics, meanderings, or questions somewhere on your page. Make several of these pages and play around with different options.
Another fun idea for those who accept gesso on hand is to brush a bit over certain areas to "mute out" the color. I'll have to endeavour this next time!
Driblet past in the comments box with any questions or clarifications.
